Is your metabolism slow? The only way to find out is to get your bloods and your thyroid checked. However, I can tell you the answer is… probably not.
Then why are you not losing weight despite eating well and working out? The answer could be NEAT. Non Exercise Activity Thermogenisis.
This is simply the calories burned doing your normal day to day activities i.e. walking to the shop, lifting boxes, cycling home even fidgeting at the desk burns calories. This NEAT effect can contribute from 15% of our daily calorie expenditure for a sedentary person all the way up to 50% for a very active person.
Rather than prescribing a cardio regime, here in Capel Fitness we ask clients to do some of the following when trying to burn more calories and burn fat;
Use a Step counter- most phones nowadays have step counters installed. Aim for 10,000 steps per day.
Get up every 30 – 60 minutes to get up and get a glass of water, stretch, or go for a walk outside, in the office or or around the campus. Its good for your mind and body and will probably increase your productivity!
Walk around your house while you’re on the phone.
Bring the dog for a walk every day.
Cycle to and from work. Even if its only once per week.
Take the stairs.
These activities may look insignificant at first glance, but they all add up over the course of the day and it is the cumulative effect of all of these activities that burn such a great amount of calories
